Drawing from Construction: Charcoal, Space and Shadow

For this 2-hour session I’ll set up a simple cardboard construction using boxes, folded shapes, tubes and cut-out forms.

The idea is for students to draw directly from the structure, looking at shape, proportion, negative space, light and shadow.

We’ll begin with a few quick charcoal drawings to get everyone looking and working loosely, then move into a short tonal exercise using charcoal and erasers.

The main part of the session will be a longer drawing, with students choosing their own viewpoint and developing the composition in their own way.

We’ll finish by putting the drawings together and having a quick informal look at the different responses.

Materials will be charcoal, large paper, erasers.
